WEBMASTER'S NOTES: Schlauer was not the first fur child our family had been owned by, but at this writing, (May 31st, 2005), his are the earliest pictures we have been able to locate in our family's collections. The family has many pictures from the past, and hopefully there will be more of the older ones discovered in the near future.
After we returned to the states for my next duty assignment, Schlauer became very attached to my Mom. So, when, only a year and a half after returning home, we again received orders to return to The Federal Republic of Germany, Schlauer remained at home with his 'Cathy!'
he first little one on our list was discovered at a Breeder's home in Karlsruhe, Germany, one sunny Saturday afternoon, shortly after I finished my duties of the day. I was still in dress uniform when the family and I drove out to look for a possible addition to the family. He found us and it was love at first sight. He was in a small pen in the Breeder's back yard with his 5 other litter mates. He was by far the runt of the litter, and Ugly was the name I would have tagged him with. But, small as he was, he was the only one in the pen that my wife, I, or any of our four children had eyes for. The breeder handed him to me, and I immediately cuddled the tiny little pooch under my chin. We never managed to remove all of the mud stains from the dress uniform shirt and tie I wore. He went home with us that very day.
His name, according to the papers that the vet sent us was Schlauer von Osterhoffen. And he had a pedigree longer than he was. He was a neurotic little guy, but he was a treasure to our family of six. In the picture on the left below, the lil guy holding him, Roy, Jr. was his constant companion all during the little dog's early life in Germany.
We were still in Germany a year later when we received the letter telling of his tragic departure for Rainbow Bridge. Schlauer had lived, loved, and cared for our family for 7 years.

WEBMASTER'S NOTES:
Herein we begin our tribute to our Rainbow Bridge Pets. These little ones, when they departed this world, took with them a part of our hearts and they, one and all, shall remain always in our memories. And I look forward to the day when we shall once again be with them and can share our days and nights as before.
